Factory splash guards provide some protection but at the expense of sandwiching waste between their molded “guards” and fender wells. Many are manufactured by contracted suppliers who specialize in economy plastics and rubber materials that come at a lower cost to the OEMs, resulting in a lower price to consumer. The difference is in how these materials age, particularly in challenging weather and road conditions. Some will stain, chalk and retain road spray; others break under duress.
